You subscribe to a working website, and if you stop paying, your site goes offline after a grace period.
Cancel inside your first year and the remaining balance of that year falls due.
Your domain is the exception, and it goes with you whatever month you leave.
And if you want the whole thing, you can have it. After one year you can buy it outright for $1,500. After two years it is free, and the files, the code, and the hosting move to your account.
